Job Description:

WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a woman in the community with personal breastfeeding experience who can provide information and support to WIC mothers after completion of the Loving Support training.  Peer counselors will help prevent and manage common breastfeeding concerns and become a friend to mothers, offering support and encouragement.

Duites:

Assist BF coordinator and WIC Program Specialist with breastfeeding promotion and support including but not limited to giving basic information, promotion and supporting pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, counseling with normal feeding, common barriers/other concerns.

Counsels WIC pregnant/breastfeeding mothers at scheduled intervals as stated in the Visit Schedule Policy. Be available for outside the usual 8am-5pm working hours to new mothers who are having breastfeeding concerns on an on-call basis. On these occasions BFPC will be asked to provide own transportation.

Document all contacts made with breastfeeding mothers in the MOSAIC software/data system, excel spreadsheet, or other tracking system in place.

Schedules and presents WIC clinic prenatal and breastfeeding education sessions/conversations and support groups monthly (at least to meet federal requirements).

Team Lead for annual breastfeeding celebrations (August); applies for donations from local Tribal Programs and/or local businesses; arranges venues, time and incentives for Pregnant/BF mothers.

Refers mothers, according to clinic established protocols, to the WIC nutritionist or Lactation consultant; the mother’s physician or nurse; public health programs in the community; Social Service agencies.

Attends monthly Peer Counselor Meetings and other meeting and trainings as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Education:  HS Diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience/Basic Knowledge: must have computer experience, Microsoft office, Excel, Publisher, Power point. Some experience in Customer Service.

Has/have breastfed at least one baby fully for one year. (Does not have to be currently breastfeeding).

Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver’s license.

Physical Requirements: Must have manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data from a computer. Ability to sit and stand for long periods. Bends and stoops regularly.

Preferences: San Felipe Preference and Veteran’s Preference.

Travel is Required

Extended working hours, including weekends is required.

Working Conditions:

Meets with participants in person at participants home, hospital or WIC office. Also contacts participants by phone, text or social media from the WIC office. Confidentiality within the WIC program is important. The BFPC is required to sign a Confidentiality Statement which will be kept in the employee file in the WIC office.
