Job Description:

Responsible for overseeing all aspects of horse care, facilities maintenance and vehicle maintenance for the Equine Program. Supports and coordinates with clinicians and Certified Peer Support Workers for equine therapy activities, life skills activities, horsemanship, ground training skills, stable management, trail riding, and minor veterinary and farrier skills.

Duites:

  1. Responsible for supervising and maintaining the horse facilities and equipment, including tack, barns, corrals and other livestock.
  2. Works with service providers including clinicians and Certified Peer Support Workers to engage clients in horse-related activities, interventions, equine instruction and skill-building activities.
  3. Oversees operations and responsibilities for Equine Professional staff, ensuring adequate training and staffing.
  4. Coordinates with Groundskeeper on maintenance of Equine facilities
  5. Co-facilitates Equine-Assisted Therapy and Equine-Assisted Life Skills services and activities. Provides equine instruction for scheduled clients of the San Felipe Equine Therapy Program.
  6. Provides horses with minor veterinary and farrier care.  Coordinate with farriers, veterinarians, feed suppliers and other equine service providers to ensure health and safety of horses in the program.
  7. Monitor health and nutritional needs of horses in the Program.
  8. Coordinates with Department of Natural Resources as needed to provide equine expertise to other programs.
  9. Respond to crisis situations in coordination with clinical staff as appropriate.
  10. Responsible for the recruiting, training and discipline of all horses and livestock.
  11. Responsible for the equine supervision and EAT training of Equine Professionals, CPSWs, clinical staff and others.
  12. Assist the Behavioral Health Director and program managers as host to all official visitors to the facility.
  13. Maintain good relationships with partners and families on behalf of the Equine Program.
  14. Maintain training requirements appropriate for quality equine programming.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education: HS Diploma required. Current PATH certification and EAGALA certification, or ability to obtain in the first six months preferred.
  • Experience/Basic Knowledge: Minimum of 5 years working with youth and families in horsemanship, ground training skills, stable management and minor veterinary and farrier skills. Knowledge of horse nutrition and health needs.  Ability to quickly assess health needs of horses and determine needed level of care. Knowledge of safe horse transportation regulations and requirements.
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid unencumbered driver’s license.
  • The ability to appropriately establish rapport and maintain relationships with adults, children and adolescents.

Physical Requirements: The work requires standing, bending, and walking within the property, heavy lifting, and ability to drive a car in all types of road conditions.  Lifting and carrying is necessary to set up equipment for therapy programs. Ability to operate e farm equipment as necessary. Ability to lift 80 lbs. is a requirement of the position.

Preferences: San Felipe Preference and Veteran’s Preference.

Working Conditions:

Works in outdoor setting for extended periods. Exposure to outside weather in all seasons is necessary. This position requires extended walking and working outdoors. Extended periods working with horses.

Supervision and Guidelines: Is supervised by the Equine Program Clinical Supervisor. Has supervisory responsibilities for Equine Professional staff.
