Bus Driver / Custodian

Job Description:
Under the general direction of the HS Director but working closely with the management staff. Ensure compliance with Head Start Transportation Standards 1310.1 through 1310.23 and any revisions to make certain safe operations of all Head Start vehicles used to transport children and staff.
Duites:
Bus Driver Duties/Responsibilities:
Develop, implement, revise Annual Transportation Service Plan to ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standard 1310.1 through 1310.23 regarding bus maintenance, monitoring and child restraint system, driver qualification, federal motor vehicle safety standard, national driver register, National standard for School Buses, Seat belt , bus safety equipment and communication system, maintenance and operation of buses and safety education with special plan to accommodate children with special needs.
Responsible for Vehicle Maintenance, certification, cleanliness, and ensuring all staff CDL licenses are current.
- Maintain and document a schedule of Vehicle (i.e. Head Start Buses, truck, and van) maintenance, inspection, certifications and licenses.
- Responsible for keeping all Head Start Vehicles clean and in safe operating condition.
- Maintain and Document all certifications and credentials for Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) licenses for self and all Head Start staff who will drive the buses. Notify staff and Head Start Director of bus drivers needing renewal.
- Ensure all licensed drivers receive adequate training and updates to Federal laws in respect to transportation. Set up quarterly CDL training.
- Monitor and maintain the files for daily mileage, monthly emergency bus drills, and daily bus inspections.
- Be familiar with state and local motor vehicle laws, especially CDL requirement for new license and renewals.
- Drive the Bus for field trips during the school year.
Document, maintain, revise Head Start Inventory Report Log of all classroom equipment and other Head Start Equipment over $500.00 with date of purchase, center location, description of equipment, cost of equipment etc.
Attend and participate in weekly staff meeting and relevant training opportunities related to safe transportation and maintenance of the Head Start Facility.
Maintain and complete Head Start Facilities/maintenance and transportation records and monthly written reports including in kind reports.
Submit updates at Policy Council Meetings and staff meetings.
Follow Head Start Child Abuse and Neglect Policy and Confidentiality Policy.
Custodial Duties/Responsibilities:
Monthly document checking facility and equipment for cleanliness, damage or conditions that may present a hazard to children to ensure equipment repairs are identified and repaired/maintained (i.e. outdoor play equipment: rust, sharp objects, loose bolts, standing water, weeds; indoor equipment: broken toys or equipment, unsecured carpet, leaky plumbing, toilet/hand washing facilities etc.)
Responsible for maintenance, repair and cleanliness of all Head Start classrooms, bathrooms and outdoor play equipment and surfaces.
Monthly Schedule to perform the duties listed.
- WEEKLY
- Thorough sweeping, vacuum, mopping and dust each classroom
- Disinfect the bathrooms according to sanitation standards.
- Clear ground/playground debris/weeds (i.e. sharp objects, paper etc.).
- Complete Head Start Center Work Order
- Rake the playground wood chips
- Ensure the sandbox is cleaned of animal debris/feces
- Repair Head Start Equipment and toys.
- Inspect/Repair all playground equipment for loose bolts, rust, spiders etc.
- Compile list of supplies needed to order
- MONTHLY
- Conduct and document monthly fire drills
- Conduct and document emergency bus evacuation
- Conduct and document other emergency preparedness drills
- EVERY OTHER MONTH
- Mop and wax Head Start Classrooms
- Clean classroom carpets
- Wash Head Start Classroom Windows
- TWICE PER SCHOOL YEAR
- Assist staff with classroom set up and end of the year pack up.
- Organize parents and community volunteers to assist in special Head Start Maintenance, building projects, center indoor and outdoor clean-up.
- AS NEEDED
- Act in response to emergency sanitation needs of the center
Responsible for Head Start Administration Offices
- Bi- Annual or as needed check and repair the Head Start Furnace, Air Conditioner, electricity, plumbing etc.
- Other building maintenance as needed (i.e. gutter and pool of water/ice at end of entrance ramp, snow/ice removal)
- Organize cleaning of Head Start office, in order to clean carpets.

Qualifications:
Education: HS Diploma or general education degree (GED)
Current CDL certification REQUIRED
Experience/Basic Knowledge: 2 years’ experience.
Required to be a mandated reporter of all suspected incidents of child abuse and neglect.
Annual physical examination and TB test.
Must pass a driver’s license check.
Must possess a CPR/First Aid Certification or willing to obtain within a certain timeframe.
Must possess a food handler’s certificate or willing to obtain within a certain timeframe.
Other Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
Must pass a thorough background check.
Must pass a sex offender registry check.
Preferences: San Felipe Preference and Veteran’s Preference.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start Act, traditional form of government and pueblo customs and traditions.
Adheres to Head Start Performance Standards and follows Head Start in-house Policies and Procedures.
Determines appropriate training needs and makes necessary recommendation to the Director.
Understands Head Start Transportation Performance Standards and specific local, state and federal transportation regulations as a supervisor.
Attends meetings, conference and participates in staff trainings when necessary.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulation and requirements related to facilities, maintenance, transporting preschool children, and vehicle maintenance.
Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic arithmetic.
Ability to establish a system to manage and prioritize multiple task and complete task prior to deadline
Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
Ability to analyze task, define problem, collect data, adopt appropriate course of action/project time line, set deadlines and initiate communication with coworkers.

Working Conditions:
Medium to high level of physical labor. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Willingness to continue education in early childhood and maintenance fields.
