Agriculture Program Supervisor

Job Description:

The incumbent will serve as an Agriculture Program Supervisor, responsible for scheduling staff and equipment, ensuring efficient operations and management of agricultural field work, irrigation facilities, equipment and tools.

Duites:

  • Ability to lead a team, working efficiently and in a positive manner to be an example to the team, while communicating closely and being accountable to the DNR Director and Tribal Leadership.
  • Ensuring tasks are performed safely and efficiently by the Ag Staff including:  physical labor, field work, crop planning and rotation, keeping tools and equipment inventoried and in good repair, furthering the goals of the Pueblo to bring acres into production for water rights, and other associated tasks.
  • Collaborates, assists and works as a team with other DNR programs in meeting deadlines on work projects.
  • Collaborating and communicating on water flows in the ditch and irrigation times, and coordinating emergency repairs to the irrigation system.   Must be willing to be on-call to address ditch breaks or other priorities of tribal leadership.
  • Planting forage and vegetable crops, maintaining healthy fields.
  • Assisting with soil building, training and other initiatives for community farmers.
  • Assisting with development of Grants and funding requests.
  • Keep tractors and equipment inventoried and in good repair.
  • Train staff or find training for staff on relevant topic including heavy equipment operation.
  • Perform laser leveling.
  • Promptly and ongoing communication regarding equipment difficulties, needed repairs or supplies,  injuries, challenges in the field, etc. to the DNR Director and Human Resources
  • Ensuring safe operation, regular maintenance and accurate inventory of tools, vehicles or other Pueblo/ DNR equipment.
  • Record keeping on crop production, bales, seed stock, field requests, equipment, supplies, etc
  • Other tasks include offseason work on irrigation system and field irrigation systems, brush clearing, hauling machines, wood and equipment.
  • Inspection and initiation of repairs, improvements and installation of infrastructure for the Pueblo, as directed. 
  • Adhering to all Pueblo of San Felipe Employee Policies and Procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Incumbent must have the ability to work effectively, lead a team, follow written and verbal instruction related to the Agriculture Program and Natural Resources Department.
  • Must be able to solve problems and take the initiative to do so by using common sense, and by following directives. 
  • Must be willing to learn and become informed on additional skills and take on new tasks and responsibilities.  
  • Incumbent must have the ability to communicate effectively with members of the Tribal Administration, DNR and tribal community while following established protocols.
  • San Felipe tribal member and Keres speaking is preferred. 
  • Must have the ability to work within the cultural and traditional aspects of agriculture in the Pueblo.

Qualifications:

  • Education:  HS Diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Experience/Basic Knowledge: one to three years of related experience; mechanical ability a plus
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver’s license required, must be insurable under tribe’s insurance 
  • Physical Requirements: Physical demands include the ability to work a full day outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs.
  • Preferences: San Felipe Tribal Member, Keres Speaker Preference and Veteran’s Preference.
