Mental Health Counselor - Health and Wellness

Job Description:

This is a community-based position that serves residents of the Pueblo of San Felipe. The incumbent provides a range of psychological assessment, diagnostic, therapeutic, and case management services for individuals, groups, and families as appropriate to the specific expectations of the position which meets the requirements of goals and objectives of the Pueblo of San Felipe Administration, Indian Health Service P.L. 93-638 contract and other federal grant funding requirements. The incumbent will work under the direct guidance of the Behavioral Health Director. Incumbent may provide practical training and guidance to clinicians and paraprofessional staff, as required.

Duites:

  • Provides counseling, individual psychotherapy to patients and/or families as appropriate to the position; prepares assessments, treatment plans, discharge plans, follow-up care, some case management, some coordination of care, and provides therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services as applicable.
  • Collects information about patients through interview, assessments, observation, case history, and psychological testing as applicable; evaluates information to identify causes of presenting problems and to determine proper therapeutic approach including referral to other specialist.
  • Provides caseload management; prepares individualized services for outpatient and inpatient placement and discharge as applicable.
  • Provides and/or arranges for therapeutic interventions as appropriate for patients in a crisis situation.
  • Consults with other therapists, related professional, and paraprofessional staff; refers patients to service agencies as appropriate to patient care.
  • May leads paraprofessionals in performance of clinical duties.
  • Coordinates care with other departments within San Felipe Pueblo including: Health and Wellness, Tribal Courts, Family Services, and others including outside agencies when deemed necessary such as mandated reporting of abuse, neglect, SI/HI, and other applicable situations.
  • Will be required to carry, maintain, and cover a program mobile phone to be used for professional purposes only
  • As “Essential Staff” may be required to be available for on-call duty coverage and must be prepared to work on days determined to be Tribal Holiday or Administrative Leave.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work or directly related field; at least two years of directly related   experience which may include internship and/or practicum.
  • NM licensure as LPCC, LPC, LMHC, LMSW, LCSW or equivalent level. 
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience practicing in a family-centered environment is desired.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated understanding and acceptance of working as a member of a multidisciplinary team and familiarity with the wraparound approach to comprehensive community-based care.
  • Experience in collaborating with family members, youth, and community cultural stakeholders through active involvement with the community.
  • Ability to apply mental health counseling methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of community mental health resources including traditional modalities.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.
  • Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of case management.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical counseling principles, programs and methodology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical mental health counseling and social work principles, methods, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to evaluate the progress of therapeutic treatments and to make individual modification.
  • Ability to maintain an effective regimen of self-care.
  • Knowledge of psychological test administration, scoring and interpretation.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients’ rights.
  • Ability to develop and present educational programs and/or workshops.
  • Knowledge in Evidence-based treatment/practice-based evidence, and community-defined evidence.
  • Openness and flexibility in tailoring the service/support delivery system to meet the clinical and cultural needs of the population of focus by being willing to listen and learn from the community itself through an inclusive planning process.
  • Keres-speaking appreciated or ability to work effectively in a multi-lingual environment with a translator.

Working Conditions:

  • Must have manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data from a computer. 
  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods. Bends and stoops regularly.
  • Work is usually conducted in an office setting.
