Job Description:

This is a community-based position that serves residents of the Pueblo of San Felipe at the Equine Therapy Program. This is multifaceted position as the incumbent will be responsible for aiding in the care and maintenance of the horses at the Equine Program. They will also work as a treatment team member, offering support and co-facilitating sessions with clinicians and Certified Peer Support Workers.  

Duites:

  • Aid in maintaining the horse facilities and equipment; including tack, barns, corrals and other livestock.
  • Provide basic care to horses; feed, water, clean manure, fly spray, and groom horses as need.
  • Assist with coordination of services for horses; with farriers, veterinarians, feed suppliers and other equine service providers to ensure health and safety of horses in the program.
  • Monitor health and nutritional needs of horses in the program.
  • Engage in ongoing staff development activities to develop and maintain skills relevant to their position within Equine-Program. Maintain training requirements appropriate for quality equine programming.
  • Work with service providers (Clinicians and Certified Peer Support Workers) to engage clients in therapeutic and/or life skills activities.
  • Co-facilitate Equine-assisted therapy/life skills activities. Provide equine related instruction for scheduled clients of the San Felipe Equine Therapy Program.
  • Coordinate with Department of Natural Resources as needed to provide equine expertise to other programs.
  • Respond to crisis situations in coordination with clinical staff as appropriate.
  • Maintain good relationships with partners and families on behalf of the Equine program.
  • Provide safe and timely transportation for clients to/from services as needed.
  • Assist with community outreach events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School diploma/GED required

Experience/Basic Knowledge:

  • Experience with horses and/or other animals is preferred but not required. Displaying a willingness to learn and work as a part of team. Incumbent must show an ability to appropriately establish rapport and maintain relationships with children, adolescents, community members as a whole, partners within the community as well as outside of the community.  

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Physical Requirements:

  • The work requires standing, bending, and walking within the property, heavy lifting, and ability to drive a car in all types of road conditions. Lifting and carrying is necessary to set up equipment for therapy programs. Ability to operate farm equipment as necessary. Ability to lift 80 lbs.
