Job Description:

Responsible to work cooperatively with an assigned Teacher and Teacher Assistant with responsibility for the safety, supervision and education of all assigned Head Start children while under the care of the program.  Performs a variety of duties of average difficulty and is primarily responsible for assisting special needs child in routine classroom activities, under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher, Disabilities/Mental Health Coordinator and Special Needs Service Providers.

Duites:

  • Mandatory reporter of all suspected incidents of child abuse and neglect.
  • In the event of a disaster, Head Start employees are required to provide assistance in accordance with the tribe’s Emergency Operations Plan or their level of training (CPR and/or First Aid).
  • All San Felipe Pueblo Head Start applicants must submit mandatory criminal background check information to the Human Resources Director before employment with the program or following any conviction occurring after commencement of employment.
  • Must follow a Drug-Free Work Place Policy and follow the intent of the Drug-Free Work Place Act.
  • Must have an annual physical and TB screening
  • May be assigned to bus monitoring duties.

Teacher Assistant(Special Education) Responsibilities:

  • Assists the classroom teaching staff with special needs child.
  • Distributes teaching materials, and helps special needs child to accomplish activities to meet IEP Goals and Head Start Child Outcomes.
  • Supervises special needs child in various activities, both indoor and outdoor.
  • Delivers information concerning Head Start to special needs child’s parents.
  • Maintains child’s records, including attendance and progress reports with teaching staff.
  • Helps in developing lesson plans, inclusive of special needs child.
  • Assists with assessments.
  • Records portfolio documentation on child’s progress.
  • Follows all rules and regulations as set forth by the Tribal Council in conjunction with the Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Works with Special Needs Service Providers to assist teaching staff in implementation of special needs child’s IEP.
  • Attends IEP meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Serves as a role model for children, parents and community members.
  • Adheres to other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To perform his job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Must be willing to work with special needs child on a continual basis throughout the day. Must be patient and understanding of child’s capabilities. Must be able to adapt and adjust activities to meet special needs child’s interest and activity level.

  • Education:  High School diploma or general education degree (GED); prefer experience working with special needs children.  Must work towards CDA and AA degree in Early Childhood Education.  Must complete CDA within 2 years of hire (failure to complete CDA will result in termination).   
  • Experience/Basic Knowledge: Must have good communication skills with staff and parents.  Good knowledge in computer skills. .  Ability to work closely with children, parents and staff. Able to work and communicate with Teacher and Teacher Assistant.   Ability to converse in both Keres and English languages
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: Prefer a valid driver’s license. Must have a food handler’s certificate and must maintain a current CDA licensure.  Must have and maintain current CPR/First Aid.
  • Physical Requirements: Must have manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data from a computer. Ability to sit and stand for long periods. Bends and stoops regularly.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Preferences: San Felipe Preference and Veteran’s Preference.

Working Conditions:

Sits for long periods of time and types.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
