Education Department

Mission: The Education Department is committed to serving our community members’ educational needs by providing guidance and resources that will assist them in working toward fulfilling their life goals.

Vision: Our vision is to be an exemplary tribal education department that empowers our community members to realize their potential to succeed.

Office: Located at the Community Care Services (CCS) Building in the Community Library

Spring/Summer Hours:
Monday – Friday, 8:00am-7:00pm & Saturdays 9:30am-3:30pm

Winter/Fall Hours:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am-6:00 pm & Saturdays 9:30am-3:00pm

The Library hosts ongoing activities such as Sewing Workshops, Keres Classes, Traditional Crafts, STEM classes, and much more. The Library is a community space where all are welcome and we hope you will come in to see all the Library and Education Department are offering here!

Services:

  • Available for check-out: books (children-adults), DVDs, hotspots, laptops, Museum Family Pass, DVD players
  • For in-library use: tablets, Xbox 360, board games
  • Interlibrary Loan with NM libraries and other libraries throughout the United States
  • Interlibrary loan is useful if you need an item we do not currently have in our collection. The Community Library can request books, audiobooks, articles, or media from other libraries that are part of the nationwide Interlibrary Loan Service program. Delivery to our Library is within 10 working days and the Library will check out the item to you as if it were our own.
  • Free services: black and white printing and copying, faxing and scanning
  • Computers with high-speed internet connectivity
  • AWE Learning Stations for children
  • Wi-Fi access throughout library and patio with charging stations
  • Meeting space available for departments and community
  • Snacks provided for all patrons

Free Online Technology Classes

Use the GetSetUp Learning Center to read articles, see the full catalog of recorded videos, and to create a free account. This gives you the option to join in-person online classes with instructors or volunteer community members. You can also track your progress and explore the GetSetUp community interest groups.

Free Online Classes – Many subjects available!

GetSetUp is a platform offering free online classes and articles. Learn at your own pace about topics including general computer knowledge, technology, cyber safety, health and wellness, lifestyle, finance, and careers. You can also create a free GetSetUp account to track your progress, join live programming taught by experts in their field, and enjoy online social hours with community members. Rio Rancho Public Library is excited to offer this resource through our partnership with the New Mexico State Library.

Katishtya Language and Culture Program 

We offer Katishtya Language Classes at the Library and in our local schools.  All classes are open to enrolled members of San Felipe and those with at least 1 parent who is enrolled.

The following schools offer Katishtya Language classes:
Bernalillo Public Schools: Algodones Elementary, Bernalillo Elementary, Spartan Learning Academy, & Bernalillo High School
Santa Fe Indian School: Both the middle school & high school levels
San Felipe Elementary School: Both the elementary & middle school levels

State Bilingual & Biliteracy Seal
San Felipe has an approved process for students in High School to gain the Bilingual Seal with their 12th grade diploma.  If you are interested in earning your Bilingual Seal complete this application and we will set up the interview.

Katishtya Language & Culture Curriculum Development
We are working on developing a more thorough curriculum for all our learners at various levels, as well as supplemental material.  Community members who are strong home language speakers and knowledgeable about the culture can apply to join our Curriculum Committee.

Katishtya Language & Culture Fluency Assessment – Certification
Are you fluent in Katishtya Keres?  You should consider becoming recognized as a fluent speaker!  We are often looking for teachers – for community classes or at our local schools.  This is the first step!  Our goal is that all San Felipe Pueblo members would be fluent speakers – join us as we work to increase Katishtya Keres use!

Katishtya Language and Culture Committee (KLCC)
The Katishtya Language and Culture Committee (KLCC) is a 5-person committee responsible for guiding and advising the Katishtya Language and Culture Program on activities, events and related programming. The KLCC holds open meetings once or twice a month. Members are appointed by Tribal Administration for 3-year terms.

Early Childhood Education 

The Education Department seeks to help families and parents with young children to begin to embark on their education and learning journey! Learning starts from the first moments and continues through a person’s life – we hope to help all community members as they choose the path they want.

TELI Collaborative – The Tribal Early Learning Initiative
The Education Department is part of the Tribal Early Learning Initiative (TELI) Collaborative. This collaborative works together to help families with young children to begin to engage in their education and learning journey. TELI organizes community-wide events 3-4 times a year to help families engage in various services. Our goal is to work together to make the experience more seamless for families and community members.

Elementary and Secondary Students 

The Education Department offers many opportunities for students, here are some examples:

  • FAFSA Assistance
  • Advocacy & support to parents and students with our local schools
    • We can attend school meetings with parents
    • We do grade checks and contact parents, students, & teachers to collaborate
    • We work with families to increase school attendance
    • We advocate in the schools for inclusion of classes like Keres
    • If you need assistance, reach out, we will do our best to help!
  • Travel & Experiences
    • Join us on trips to National Conferences
    • We take groups of students on excursions and opportunities several times a year, check our newsletter to ensure you don’t miss an opportunity!

Parents and students (K-12 and college) can also get homework help via the live online tutoring and homework help website, BrainFuse. Access to BrainFuse is made possible through a grant to the New Mexico State Library. Live tutors are available daily from 2:00 pm – 11:00 pm. You must have an internet connection to access this service.

Tribal Youth Council

The Education Department is helping to build the Katishya Youth Council! A recent trip to UNITY National Conference helped some of our youth learn more about the concept of a Tribal Youth Council. Are you interested in joining this important group to be a voice in the community?

Recent activities have included hosting the 1st Annual Youth Tribal Summit in Albuquerque, a community clean up, and fun days out hiking. We work with the Council to creatively serve the community as well as engage other youth.

We’d love your ideas and hope you will join us and build your leadership skills while also having fun!

Adult Education Services

High School Equivalency Help

The Education Department works with both UNM and CNM to help students register and take their HiSET and/or GED preparation classes to obtain their High School Equivalency
– CNM – Adult Education

  • Classes are offered in person at CNM or virtually online
  • Eligibility requirements: must be 16
  • Accepted students have access to stipends and school supplies through the JPT program
  • Santa Fe Community College – Adult Education
  • We will work with students to contact the school and set up a schedule that works for them.

Community members interested in earning their high school equivalency are encouraged to contact the Education Department to discuss this and other options for HiSET and GED preparation.

Tribal Scholarship
The Tribal Scholarship is available to eligible enrolled San Felipe tribal members to continue their education at regionally accredited postsecondary institutions to earn a certificate, undergraduate or graduate level degrees.

– Tribal Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

  • Enrolled member of the Pueblo of San Felipe
  • Completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • 2.0 cumulative GPA upon application or if your GPA is below a 2.0 and a minimum of 5 years has passed since you last attended school, submit an appeal letter.
  • Enrolled in a regionally accredited postsecondary institution
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours of courses
  • Must not be in default on a federal or tribal loan or owe a refund on a federal grant

– Scholarship Award Amounts:

  • Full-time students are eligible for up to $3000.00 per semester
  • Part-time students for up to $1500.00 per semester.
  • Eligible students with no demonstrated need are eligible for a $500.00 award.

  • NM Highlands – 3 students
  • UNM – 1 student
  • NMSU – 1 Freshman student
  • Santa Fe Community College – 1 student
