Job Description:

The Medical Assistant will assist IHS primary care providers and tribal behavioral health providers to facilitate seamless delivery of care to San Felipe patients and clients.


  • Assist primary care and behavioral health providers and nurses with performing standard care procedures, e.g., collecting vitals, blood draws, completing urine screen/analysis)
  • Updating patient’s health information and medical history
  • Evaluating patient symptoms and triaging appropriately
  • Scheduling patient appointments and follow up
  • Communicating with pharmacy to obtain most recent medications lists
  • Coordinating with medical and behavioral health staff to communicate lab results to appropriate providers
  • Performing data entry
  • Tracking referrals and diagnoses
  • Ensuring referrals result in appropriate care and follow-up
  • Conducting home visits as needed for patients
  • Administrative duties include: reviewing behavioral health referral logs for timely provider follow-up, assisting with meeting logistics, attending meetings, engaging in quality assurance practices (e.g. reports to admin team regarding data sets).  

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as needed for the Behavioral Health Integration Initiative grant.


  • Education:  Minimum of high school diploma or GED, and 2+ years of working in the healthcare field.
  • Experience/Intermediate Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, hospitals, and healthcare facilities. Previous medical assistant experience in an outpatient setting required. Experience working in an IHS facility and/ or understands the functions of an integrated behavioral health in primary care setting preferred. Previous experience working with the Native American population preferred.
  • Required Licenses/Certifications: Must be CMA or RMA certified and accredited though Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Physical Requirements: Must have manual dexterity to enter and retrieve data from a computer. Ability to sit and stand for long periods. Bends and stoops regularly.
  • Personal Qualities: Ability to maintain a positive professional attitude; well-organized and detail oriented; superior customer service skills; strong verbal and written skills;
  • Preferences: Fluent Keres speaker Preference.

Working Conditions:

Works between IHS and behavioral health sites. Sits for long periods of time and types. Travel within San Felipe Pueblo is expected.
