Facilities/Maintenance Coordinator

Job Description:

Under the general direction of the HS Director but working closely with the management staff. Ensure compliance with Head Start Facilities Performance Standard 1304.53 through 1304.53 (a) (10) (xvii) and 1304.53 (b) (1) (vi) and any revisions to make certain facilities, materials, toys, furniture, indoor and outdoor play equipment and surfaces are maintained, safe and accessible, develop, implement, and revise annual Facilities Maintenance Service Plan.

Duites:

1. Knowledgeable of and ascertain compliance to all IHS Environmental Health, Tribal, State of New Mexico, Local licensing and zoning requirements, fire, health, safety and environmental hazards (1304.53 (a) (6). Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and cleanliness of all Head Start classrooms, bathrooms, grounds and playgrounds.
  a. Develop, implement, and revise annual Facilities/Maintenance Service Plan.
  b. Indian Health Services Environmental Health Reports.
   1. Document all issues and agreed upon Head Start or tribal responsibility;
   2. Create and maintain a log of follow-up on each of the outstanding issues and responsibilities. Log must contain results of bi-weekly follow-up, statue of issue, completion date and signature of tribe and Head Start center staff certifying completion.
   3. Letter to IHS of resolution of each of the issues.
 c. Fire Plan
   1. Each September, check and update classroom and central office fire evacuation plan.
   2. Each September, classroom and staff training of fire drill policy and procedure and operation plan for monthly fire drills and bus evacuations.
   3. Annual inspection of center and central office fire extinguisher.
 d. Complete, identify tribal or Head Start responsibility with work order and maintain follow-up; log issues for annual safety inspections of heating & cooling system, electrical system, storage cleaning, exit signs, electrical outlets covered, toilet and hand washing facilities, diaper changing tablets, ventilation and air quality, sewage and waste disposal, adaptation facilities to comply with American Disabilities Act and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health guidelines).
2. Provide maintenance, repair, safety and security of facility, materials and equipment owned or used by Head Start (1304.53 (a) (7).
a. Monthly document checking facility and equipment for damage or condition that present hazard to children to ensure equipment repairs are identified and repaired/maintained (i.e. outdoor play equipment: rust, sharp objects, loose bolts, standing water, weeds; indoor equipment: broken toys or equipment, unsecured carpet, leaky plumbing, toilet/hand washing facilities etc.)
b. Responsible for maintenance, repair and cleanliness of all Head Start classrooms, bathrooms and outdoor play equipment and surfaces. Responsible for Head Start Administration Offices
1. Bi-Annual or as needed check and repair the Head Start Furnace, Air Conditioner, electricity, plumbing etc.
2. Other building maintenance as needed (i.e. gutter and pool of water/ice at end of entrance ramp, snow/ice removal)
3. Organize cleaning of Head Start office, in order to clean carpets.
4. Adheres to Head Start Performance Standards and follows Head Start in-house Policies and Procedures.
5. Determines appropriate training needs and makes necessary recommendation to the Director.
6. Understands Head Start Transportation Performance Standards and specific local, state and federal transportation regulations as a supervisor.
7. Attends meetings, conference and participates in staff trainings when necessary.
8. Works with custodian with the daily cleaning of classrooms, bathrooms, offices, and other areas of the building.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • HS Diploma or general education degree (GED)

Experience/Basic Knowledge:

  • 2 years’ experience
  • Required to be a mandated reporter of all suspected incidents of child abuse and neglect.
  • Annual physical examination and TB test.

Licenses/Certification:

  • Must pass a driver’s license check.
  • Must possess a CPR/First Aide Certification or willing to obtain within a certain time frame.
  • Must possess a food handler’s certificate or willing to obtain within a certain time frame.

Other Requirements:

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
    • Must pass a thorough background check.
  • Must pass a sex offender registry check.

Preferences: San Felipe Preference and Veteran’s Preference.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start Act, traditional form of government and Pueblo customs and traditions.
    • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulation and requirements related to facilities, maintenance, transporting preschool children, and vehicle maintenance.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation and basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to establish a system to manage and prioritize multiple task and complete task prior to deadline.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze task, define problem, collect data, adopt appropriate course of action/project time line, set deadlines and initiate communication to supervisor.
  • Ability to work independently, investigate and resolve problems, make sound decisions, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice, and desire to help when dealing with people.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including Windows; Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, Power Point etc.
